Typical ultrasound, also known as ultrasonography, uses high frequency sound waves combined with their echoes to make an image. SONAR used by submarines and the echolocation of bats and whales are examples of ultrasound. Medically, diagnostic ultrasound is used in gynecology to determine fetal size, gender and growth, in cardiology to visualize the heart and detect abnormal function, and in urology to locate kidney stones.
