Cellulite is simply subcutaneous (beneath
the skin) fat. Examined closely, cellulite is made up of fibrous
strands of tissue that come up between the fat cells and attach
to the skin. This relatively simple concept is what causes cellulite
to give your skin the creased appearance where affected by cellulite.
Most people who have cellulite get it on the upper thighs, buttocks
and abdomen. The severity of cellulite can range from being almost
invisible cellulite to visible cellulite whether one is standing,
sitting, or lying down. Most commonly cellulite is attributed
to poor blood circulation, defective connective tissue, and enlarged
fat cells. Genetics are also blamed for cellulite is some cases.
It should be noted that while cellulite is not a disease, many people
who have cellulite seek cellulite treatment because of unsightly
lumps, bumps, and dimples that form on the skin as a result of cellulite.
Cellulite affects the majority of women (and
some men). Although more prominently seen in overweight individuals,
cellulite also affects individuals who may be of normal weight and are athletic.
There are several options available for reduction
and treatment of cellulite. Surgery is always an option; however,
the superficial nature of cellulite might mean that you would need
liposuction on a very large surface of the body making liposuction
a lengthy, painful, and expensive option. Other non surgical cellulite
treatment options have been shown to only marginally improve cellulite
if at all helpful in removing cellulite.
Machines that use a rolling/sucking technique for cellulite reduction
have also by and large proved to be ineffective. Similarly, endermologie,
which not only required a lot of suction but also many treatments,
has shown only limited success on its own. Dr. Gidon introduced UltraShape™ body contour treatment in her Toronto dermatology clinic to reduce localized fat deposits. UltraShape™ is not a specific treatment for cellulite, but when the fat is reduced by UltraShape™, the appearance of cellulite is improved.
